Reglazing Windows: Restoring Your Vintage Home’s Windows

The windows in your house have glass panes which have glazing, a putty-like material that weatherproofs the glass in a wooden frame. Regardless if you're reglazing your windows as a restoration or when replacing a broken glass pane, you will need to seal the glass and wooden frame with a putty to keep the weather out of the joints.

Back in the day, putty was made up of lime and/or white lead mixed with linseed oil. When removing old putty, you need to wear dust protection since asbestos fibers were regularly added in the early 20th century. Today, you can purchase safe linseed-oil putty, a glazing compound. It doesn’t take much skill to become an expert glazer.

The Right Way

Do use glazing compound, aka putty.

Traditional window glazing is not a hard process. All you really need is some well-kneaded glazing compound and a putty knife. By using a putty knife, you can more easily create perfect putty bevels against pretty much any muntin profile. It also enables you to cut sharp, clean corners, creating an overall great appearance which will be ready for priming in a couple of days. The cleanup process is really simple as well. On a properly maintained window, the glazing compound can last for many years.

The Wrong Way

Don’t use caulk as putty.

Although it may seem like caulking would be the easier way out for sealing glass windows into the sash, it comes with may drawbacks, both functional and cosmetic. The bead of caulk can’t properly cover the sash rabbet, the small shelf that the glass sits on since it varies in size. Smoothing the caulking bead is challenging since caulk is difficult to contorl. This presents a problem for a fine job such as reglazing windows.

Another drawback to caulk is that it shrinks after a certain time, which will leave a concave bed that can hold water. It also doesn’t have as long of a lifespan as glazing compound does. Furthermore, certain caulks come with a strong adhesion (like silicone caulk) which will be extremely challenging to remove later, and the removal may even cause the glass to break. Caulk required mechanical removal, and it commonly takes the wood with it, leaving a rough edge.

How is Laser Hair Removal Compared to Electrolysis?

Hair is an integral part of our body. However, sometimes it becomes too much or grows in areas where it’s not intended to be. This makes us think of the best way to get rid of it. That is not the only reason for seeking hair removal treatment. Any good reason you have is valid, and you will get the treatment if you visit your physician.

There are numerous techniques for getting rid of unwanted hair, but our main focus is the laser hair removal as compared to electrolysis. To start with, we are going to distinguish and define the two methods appropriately for easy follow-up. The definition itself is one of the comparison features between the two systems.

Laser hair removal is a technique that uses selective photothermolysis to target the melanin in the hair follicles and thereby destroy the hair growth cells. On the other hand, electrolysis is performed by inserting a thin metal like object in the hair follicle and then applying electric current to destroy the hair follicle.

Comparison of laser hair removal to electrolysis

  • Laser hair removal is friendlier and less painful as compared to electrolysis. Lasers mostly rely on light and heat technology, but electrolysis uses a needle-like object to destroy the hair follicles.

  • Due to the objects used, electrolysis works on each hair at a time, but since lasers work through a beam or ray of light, they can work on a larger surface with more than a couple of hair follicles. However the more coherent and focused the light is, the more likely it is to produce better results.

  • The main limitation of laser hair removal is the fact that it can only efficiently work on hairs that are darker than the color of the skin. Trying otherwise can easily lead to tanning of the skin and burns. On the other hand, electrolysis can work on all skin types irrespective of the color of the hair.

  • Maybe it’s these limitations that have made laser hair removal treatment not to be approved by the FDA whereas electrolysis is approved. However, it is worth noting that it is the only permanent hair removal method that has been approved by FDA.

  • The lack of approval can also be attributed to the fact that laser hair removal is more current compared to electrolysis that has been around for more than four decades.

  • Laser hair removal treatment requires lesser treatment sessions compared to electrolysis that can require 15-30 sessions for effective hair removal. With lasers, even seven sessions can be enough, but the number can vary depending on the skin type and amount of hair.

  • Laser hair removal treatment is less effective compared to electrolysis, and this is mostly contributed by the fact that no single laser can be suited for all people. So, in order to achieve desirable results, the doctor may be required to have more than one laser. The high purchase costs involved tempt the physicians to use one laser on a variety of skin types, and this further contributes to their ineffectiveness.

  • Though not encouraged, a laser can be used even at home but electrolysis requires professional skills to operate the machines. Please, note that electronic tweezers and photo epilators do not constitute permanent electrolysis and are even prohibited in some states.

Putting all factors into consideration, we can say that based on the fact that lasers are friendlier to use, many people might prefer to use them. They might not be as effective as electrolysis, but they also produce satisfactory results. The experience of the physician operating the machine also determines greatly on the efficiency of both methods.

What If My Leased Car is Repossessed

Consequences of a Car Repossession

Some people might experience time difficulty and not be able to makey their monthly payments on a leased car. If you’re currently in this situation, you have two choices. Your first choice is to return the vehicle voluntarily (voluntary repossession). The other option is to simply wait for your car to be repossessed (involuntary repossession).

Regardless of what happens, you will still owe the same amount on your lease, which will be calculated by the leasing company based on the terms of your contract. There will be no negative impact on your credit score if you return your vehicle yourself and pay the remaining balance off. However, if you can’t afford to make your monthly payments, it’s very unlikely that you will be able to pay off the balance.

Keep in mind that the remaining balance on a lease will be more than you think. The remaining balance is the “realized value” for the car plus costs and remaining payments. If you didn’t make a substantial down payment or trade-in when you began your lease, the balance can easily be unaffordable. And it needs to be paid in full, no more monthly payments.

If you’re unable to pay the remaining balance due on your lease, the car will be sold at a car auction and the selling price minus costs will be deducted from your balance. You will receive a bill for whatever remains.

On top of this, the credit agencies will be notified of your default, which will damage your credit score for 7 years. Those that are unable to pay the remaining balance will be sued, with the debt given to a lawyer or collections agency. Collection companies are very persistent and can even take money from your bank account or garnish your income. In some cases, it may be possible to settle for a smaller amount, assuming you will be able to pay it.

It’s obviously best to find a way to keep making your monthly car lease payments. Certain lease companies will be flexible in working with you and help find you a solution. It’s not in their best interest to repossess your car.

Pregnant and Vegetarian: What to Eat to Provide Yourself and the Baby with Necessary Nutrients

Today, people are becoming more and more conscious about what they eat and the number of vegetarians and vegans grows every day. Such a choice requires special attention to the components of your daily menu because your body shouldn’t lose any of the necessary nutrients you miss from meta-products. This is especially important for those who are expecting a baby.

Many future vegetarian moms experience shaming and lack of understanding during their pregnancy. Doctors, relatives, and the mass media shame vegetarian women for being selfish by not providing the full nutrition for the fetus by not consuming meat products. Nevertheless, it is possible to stay true to what you believe in and provide a completely healthy nutrition for yourself and the baby without sacrificing your vegetarian principles.

The Main Principles of Vegetarian Nutrition in Pregnancy

Here is a list of the most important elements your daily menu should contain:

It has a crucial importance for the baby because it is the active element in your child’s bone formation process. If your body won’t receive enough calcium, the baby will “take it” from your portion and it will affect your health and beauty negatively.

This is why you should eat more dairy or tofu if you’re vegan, green leafy products, seeds, cabbage, broccoli, kale, and beans. In addition, it will be good to take additional calcium supplements specially made for pregnant women.

Vitamin D

Its natural source is the sunlight that makes it synthesize in our body. To have enough of it, you should stay in the sun for 30 minutes at least three times a week. Outdoor walks and fresh air are very useful for pregnant women.

If climate or other reasons don’t allow you to receive enough vitamin D, you should take it as a supplement or as part of a special vitamin complex.

Vitamin B12

This is the exact reason why everybody around forces you to eat meat. A lack of this vitamin is what makes you crave for meat despite your awareness. How to replace meat? You need to get an extended blood test to see what elements are missing in your body and consult a nutritionist to know how to fulfill them. Besides meat, you can find this element in seaweed, tempeh, soy drinks, granola, and milk.

Many vegetables are rich in this so it won’t be a problem for a vegetarian to have enough. More beans (in the first half of the day to avoid bloating), green vegetables, seeds, pomegranates, and leafy products will help you with this. If you still have anemia, you can take iron additionally as a supplement.

A pregnant woman needs 30% more protein when compared to an average person. These are beans, dairy, seeds, nuts, and cereal. Many vegetables contain protein as well.

It’s Not Only Your Diet That’s Important!

  • Although a pregnant woman must eat well, avoid overeating not to gain too much weight and not to stress your vessels.

  • A pelvic exam and a visit to your physician are necessary to control your health and the health of your baby. Don’t miss them.

Expense - What Is an Expense?

An expense or expenses is basically when you have money flowing out of your pocket or business. Generally, it’s when money goes to a company or another individual as a payment for their services or for an item. Yet, this is only one way you can explain what an expense is.

If you are running a business, you should include all the business operations in the company’s records. This includes even the smallest expenses. However, you should also keep in mind to only include expenses that are related to the company.

Managing a company’s expenses is a crucial part of any company’s financial health and is only one of the many aspects to take care of when it comes to running a business. Keeping tabs on the company’s expenses will enable you to work better with the company’s finances.

The meaning of “expenses” for a company is money that has been used to grow the company or grows the operations of the business.

Different types of company expenses

The amount of different expenses available is infinite. Therefore, we can’t list them all as it would make up a book. Though, the number of expenses a company or business has can be calculated by the size and nature of the business. There is, however, some basic expenses that every business will have in common.

Here are some of the most common expenses found in all sizes and types of businesses:

•    Rent expenses. Almost all companies will have rent expenses at one point or another. This could be rent or mortgage payments as rent expenses consist of the space required to be able to function.

•    Wage expenses. Every business needs employees and all employees need to earn a salary. Thus, wage expenses are seen in all businesses. It is money that the business or company uses to pay their employees.

•    Interest expenses. All businesses have interest expenses no matter how big or small. An interest expense is owed interest a business has which can be on business loans, found with vendors and more.

Recording an expense

A business should have something called an expense account. With an expense account, they will record all the business’s expenses. These expenses are recorded on the debit side of the company’s expense account and makeup part of an income statement account.

When recording credit, it will either be recorded to be an asset or a liability. This is in agreement with double-entry bookkeeping. Yet, there are many variables and methods to record different aspects of a business’s income and expenses. Some companies prefer to record their expenses on the company’s profit and loss sheet.

How a transaction is recorded will all depend on what method was chosen by the company. If a company chooses to use the accrual method of accounting, they record their expenses as soon as they are incurred.

For example, a company pays for their internet services provided to their offices on a monthly basis. But, in actual fact, the company pays the bill for the following month, it is an advanced payment. In such a case, the company will still record the payment for the month as incurred even though the payment was actually made the flowing month.

Expenses you can claim

There is a variety of expenses occurred by a business or company that can be claimed back on their yearly tax sheet. Most of these listed here are all allowable expenses. Nonetheless, always remember that no company is limited to these only. There may be many others available for your industry.

The basic claimable expenses include:

•    Office supply cost will include ink toner, pens, paper, and more.

•    All the company’s traveling costs like mileage, however, it has to be related to the business operations.

•    The monthly cost of running your business such as office space, heating, internet, electricity, and more.

•    Advertising and marketing fees.

•    Raw materials and any type of supplies that was purchased for the company for resale.

Adding expenses in Debitoor

A simple and easy way to manage your expenses is by using Depitoor. Depitoor was created to make keeping track of expenses a lot easier. You can easily add expenses anywhere you are and at any given time. Debitoor is also capable of running on an Android or iPhone.

Not all business owners have the needed knowledge when starting a company. Therefore, many may choose to use a company for basic bookkeeping, financial management, payroll and other aspects.

When looking for a company to assist with the financial aspects of your business be sure to look at all the different companies available. Some of these companies only offer the basics such as income and expenses, where others offer comprehensive services including tax and money management.

Is It Safe to Take Cold Medications During Pregnancy?

Coming down with a cold is unpleasant, and particularly for pregnant women. While some of the ingredients in cold medications are regarded safe, there are those that should be avoided while expecting a child. A majority of the cold medicines are multi-symptom medications, meaning that they consist of two or more drugs. Such medications often include antihistamines that alleviate the symptoms of an allergy and antitussives.

It helps to suppress the coughs and expectorants that help loosen up the mucus. For the pregnant woman who got a cold, here are a few things to consider.

The Symptoms to Watch Out For

The most prevalent symptoms of a cold include fever, achiness, and fatigue. You may also have a runny nose, a sore throat, cough or sneeze a lot. If your condition has already intensified then you may have difficulty when breathing, chest in the pain, a high fever, and persistent vomiting. Advisably, you should seek your physician's help as soon as you experience any mild symptoms.

Going Natural

Before rushing to the pharmacy to purchase some over-the-counter drugs (OTC – drugs), you should consider some good old-fashioned natural remedies. Opting for home-made solutions is better, especially given the fact that most OTC drugs only help to relieve symptoms. Some of these remedies include:

•    Chicken soup

•    Hot showers

•    Vaporizer’s

•    Saline nasal wash, etc.

Cold Medications that are Safe during Pregnancy

Home remedies may not always work, forcing you to look for cold medicines. The antihistamines that are considered as low-risk and safe to take during pregnancy include:

•    Chlorpheniramine

•    Loratadine

•    Doxylamine

•    Brompheniramine

•    Phenindamine

•    Triprolidine

The local anesthetic called benzocaine is also considered as safe. Ideally, this drug is mixed with dextromethorphan, making it useful in the treatment of sore throats. The best part is that this medication never gets into the bloodstream, meaning that it poses no risk to your developing baby. Another cold medicine that is safe for pregnant women is acetaminophen. This drug has been well-studied and found safe as long as you stick to the right dosage.

Cold Medications to Avoid during Pregnancy

One class of medicines that you will need to avoid completely while expecting a child is decongestants. Like pseudoephedrine, and phenylephrine. Over the years, some babies have suffered from congenital disabilities that have developed due to the intake of these decongestants from their mothers while pregnant. Moreover, keep pain relievers such as ibuprofen, aspirin, sodium salicylate and naproxen away, especially if you are in your third trimester.

How to Reduce the Risk of a Cold during Pregnancy?

Without a doubt, pregnant women undergo multiple changes. One of these undesirable changes is that the immune system weakens. Although a weaker immune system helps to stop your body from rejecting the unborn child, it also makes you susceptible to various viral and bacterial infections. Thankfully, there are a couple of things that you can do to minimize the risk of getting colds.

•    Take the Flu Vaccine - First, you should make a point of getting the flu vaccine. Doing so helps your body to process antibodies, which are then passed onto your child. The vaccine protects your child until they reach six months, at which point they are mature enough to receive such vaccines by themselves. According to a report published in the Clinical Infectious Disease Journal, flu vaccines are 92% efficient at keeping infants from being hospitalized.

•    Eat healthily - You will need to eat well. If you are not capable of eating large meals, you can try having small options more frequently. Always incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your meal plan. These foods are rich in antioxidants for strengthening your immune system.

•    Wash your hands regularly - Another tip is to wash your hands as frequently as you can to shun picking up bacteria and viruses. Remember to scrub the front and back of your nails, beneath your fingernails and in between the fingers. If you have no access to water and soap, you can utilize alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

•    Get rest - Although pregnancy may bring about restlessness, you should try and get as much rest as possible. Doing so is another way of strengthening your immune system. Moreover, engaging in stress-reducing activities can help. For instance, you can sign up for a yoga class, meditate or spend a day at a spa.

•    As mentioned getting a cold when you're pregnant can lead to a stressful situation. Some symptoms of colds, which you may experience, include a stuffy nose, cough, chills, and sneezing. It would be advisable to consult your physician before taking any cold medications. The reason for this is that some of these drugs contain ingredients that endanger both you and your unborn baby.

Cataract Surgery Details Revealed

A lot of people aged 50 and up have likely heard their eye doctor say that they have cataracts. What a cataract basically is, is when the lens inside the eye clouds up, causing a visual blur that cannot be solved by wearing glasses.

This is also a problem that cannot be solved with LASIK (corneal refractive surgery) or with contact lenses. Having cataracts might sound frightening but with modern technology, your vision can be restored back to normal.

The new technology of today will work wonders and you will not lose your eyesight to cataracts. In many cases, it even reduced the chances of needing glasses in the future. People commonly associate cataracts with aging and it is very common among older people.

According to the NEI (National Eye Institute) in 2010 more than 68.3 % of Americans older than 80 have cataracts. Because of this knowledge, the number of people with cataracts is expected to increase in America during the following years to come, partially due to the aging population.

About 24.4 million Americans had cataracts in 2010 and according to the NEI, it should increase to 50.2 million Americans by the year 2050. Modern cataract surgery is said to be one of the utmost effective and safest surgical procedures available today.

In the United States, there are more than 3 million people who go for cataract surgery yearly. The majority of cataract surgeries have great outcomes, providing excellent effects.

Cataract surgery basics

If you undergo cataract surgery, they will remove the clouded lens inside your eye and replace it with an artificial lens (this is called an IOL or an intraocular lens). After surgery, your vision will be restored and you will be able to see clearly.

Typically, this treatment does not require you to stay overnight after surgery in a care facility or in a hospital. The procedure mostly is done on an outpatient basis.

A lot of modern cataract surgery use high-frequency ultrasounds to break up the cloudy lens into smaller pieces. Your doctor then gently removes it from the eye. This procedure can be performed with tiny incisions; a procedure is called phacoemulsification or phaco.

The treatment reduces the risk of complications during a cataract surgery and has a much quicker healing span.

When all the little pieces of the clouded lens have been removed, your doctor or surgeon will insert a transparent intraocular lens into your eye. The surgeon will ensure that it is positioned securely and right where your natural lens was positioned, behind your pupil and your iris.

In some rare cases an IOL lens will be used and placed in front of your pupil and iris, but this happens very seldom.

The surgeon will finish the surgery by closing the incision that was made in your eye. Your surgeon might use a stitch but generally, it is not needed. After a cataract surgery, you will wear an eye-patch to help with your cataract surgery recovery and to protect the eye.

Laser cataract surgery

A number of new femtosecond lasers have been approved by the FDA to be used to complete cataract surgery within the United States. These lasers are quite similar to those used to create the corneal flap in laser LASIK procedures.

The lasers have been approved to be used in the following list of cataract surgeries as it reduces the need for hand-held tools, as well as surgical blades:

•    Creating a corneal incision (this allows your surgeon to access your eye’s lens)

•    Creating peripheral corneal incisions (this is to reduce astigmatism if needed)

•    Fragmenting the cataract (this is so that less phaco energy is needed to fracture and remove it)

•    Removing the lens’s anterior capsule

Eye surgery has advanced tremendously during the last couple of years and has brought us not only new techniques but also less downtime and more success. Talk to your eye-doctor today and get those cataracts removed.

Do You Understand What Cryosurgery Is All About?

Cryosurgery is the kind of surgical procedure that involves extreme cold to destroy any abnormal tissue like tumors. Most of the time doctors use liquid nitrogen, though they might also use argon or carbon dioxide. With liquid nitrogen, it offers temperatures between -320 and -346 F, it’s possible to instantly freeze just about everything it makes contact with.

Most human tissue cells can be destroyed and killed upon contact. It’s important, especially if these cells are cancerous.

Cryosurgery typically is used to treat precancerous lesions or tumors that are present on the skin. Although, other tumors that are inside of your body may also be treated with the same procedure.

Through advancements in technologies, cryosurgery’s lasting side effects are now greatly reduced from what it used to be. Yet, studies are still ongoing to further improve cryosurgery’s effectiveness and lasting side effects. This procedure is very similar to techniques doctors use in freezing off warts with nitrogen liquid spray.

Reasons to perform cryosurgery

It’s normally used in destroying infected tissues on or in your body. Most of the time, it can be used for cancer, although, it’s not a first defense choice. Still, doctors may use it when other treatments fail and especially when cancer returns after these treatments.

Very often it may be performed to treat precancerous or cancerous lesions that appear on your skin. It can also be used sometimes on organs such as on your liver if certain problems and diseases may be risky or difficult to perform with conventional surgery.

It’s primarily used to treat early detected cancer if other treatments for cancer fails and it returns.

Associated risks with cryosurgery

There are risks involved with cryosurgery, just like any medical procedure. Although, it’s considered much lower as with other treatments for cancer, like radiation and surgery.

Cryosurgery risks

White skin in the area of your surgery

Sexual dysfunction

A sensation loss when your nerves might be affected

Healthy vessels or tissues close to the treated area may get damaged

Potential side effects or complications with cryosurgery

Healing problems

Blisters and bleeding

Hair loss in the area that was treated

Pigmentation loss

Sensation loss in the area that was treated for twelve to eighteen months

Cryosurgery procedure

The doctor might use medicine to numb the area of treatment to prevent any discomfort or pain, after which he/she will apply the nitrogen liquid onto the skin by using spray or a cotton swab.

If the area that must be treated is internal, the surgeon makes use of a scope. It’s a tube that is flexible and it will fit into different openings like a surgical incision, your urethra or rectum.

The nitrogen liquid can be fed and applied onto areas that need treatment and the cells that are targeted. These cells then freeze and die, thus, your body can slowly absorb them.

Surgeons generally use imaging equipment like an ultrasound to guide them while performing the procedure.

Follow ups after the surgery

In most cases, you should be able to go home immediately after the procedure. Nonetheless, it might be necessary for some days of hospital stay if it involved an organ internally.

At home, you may need to take care of any wounds from incisions or your skin or where it was frozen. The doctor can provide you with instructions but typical care only involves the changing of bandages and to keep the area clean and free from contaminants. This is required in order to prevent any infections.

Appointments for follow-ups are very important. At these appointments, the doctor can evaluate the success of the treatment, whether there are any complications and if you might need extra treatments.

Cryosurgery is very effective to treat a wide range of skin problems that are benign. Additionally, it can also be used for treating lesions, but mostly in areas that don’t bear hair on your body.

Benign lesions of the skin that can be treated with freezing will include dermatofibroma, molluscum contagiosum, viral wart, seborrheic keratosis, solar lentigo, and actinic keratosis. This treatment doesn’t require much time and it can easily be done in the doctor’s office.

The Importance of Your Eye Health and Diabetic Eye Exams

You might have excellent eyesight, thus, you will feel surprised by your doctor’s recommendation to visit an eye specialist. Even though you have diabetes, you have no problems with your vision and don’t see the reason to get a checkup for your eyes.

This may feel right, yet, may not be.

If you suffer from diabetes, it’s possible to develop devastating potential eye problems which might not cause any distorting or discomfort to your vision yet. Although cataract and Glaucoma problems are usually found among older patients, it can also be a high risk to develop in patients that have diabetes.

It’s generally treatable conditions in the early stages but if it goes untreated it may cause loss of vision and blindness. Diabetes can affect different areas of the body, including the eyes which may cause diabetic retinopathy to develop. It’s a condition where blood vessels in the retina get damaged which contains the light-sensitive area at the back of the eye.

Extreme damage can cause loss of vision, plus, you might experience less intensity, blurry eyesight, or your sight starts to disappear. It may affect anyone with type one or two diabetes, thus, it’s very important to adopt a healthy lifestyle, as well as learn how to manage your diabetes.

Facts you should know about eye diseases related to diabetes

Eye diseases related to diabetes can comprise of different eye conditions which may affect you if you have diabetes. It may include glaucoma, cataract, DME/diabetic macular edema, and diabetic retinopathy.

All diabetic eye disease types can potentially cause blindness or severe loss of vision.

Diabetic retinopathy may involve some changes to the blood vessels in your retina, and cause the retina to leak fluid or bleed, which will distort your vision. It’s a very common reason for the loss of vision among diabetic patients and the biggest reason for blindness in working-age adults.

DME/diabetic macular edema is the result of diabetic retinopathy, which causes swelling in your retina’s area also known as the macula.

To control diabetes, it’s important to take prescribed medications, maintain a healthy diet, and stay physically active, which may delay or prevent loss of vision.

Due to the fact that diabetic retinopathy may not be noticed until loss of vision appears, it’s important if you have diabetes to go for a dilated eye exam preferably every year.

With detecting the condition early, regular treatments, as well as suitable follow-up care for this disease it may protect you against loss of vision. There are different treatments for this disease, and they can be combined or tried separately.

Symptoms and signs of diabetic retinopathy

During the early stages, you might not experience any symptoms. However, as time goes by and it worsens, the following symptoms can appear and you should contact your doctor.

Dots or floaters and also dark strings can appear in your vision’s field.

Empty or dark areas may also disturb your vision.

Difficulty to focus

Blurry vision

Changes in your vision that might fluctuate

Color altered vision

Total or partial loss of vision

This condition can often affect both of your eyes in the same amount and time. Yet, if only experiencing the condition in one of your eyes, it doesn’t mean it’s not diabetic retinopathy. It can possibly indicate some other condition of your eye, but it’s important to consult your eye doctor for a treatment plan that is right.

Reasons for developing diabetic retinopathy

Extra sugars that build up in the blood may cause different health problems. Within the eyes, excessive glucose might damage small vessels which supply blood to the retina. As time goes by, these damaged vessels can block the blood flow completely.

With chronic blood vessel damage to the retina, it can affect the vision. Due to blood flow that is diminished, the eye may attempt in fixing this situation and grow new blood vessels. This is known as neovascularization, but the new vessels won’t be as strong or effective as what the original vessels were. They can rupture or leak and impact negatively on your vision.

Because there is a lack of early symptoms with diabetic retinopathy, patients that have diabetes needs to go for a complete dilated eye exam regularly every year. Nonetheless, if you already developed diabetic retinopathy, you will need more frequent eye exams.

Women that suffer from diabetes and fall pregnant need an immediate complete dilated eye exam. It might also be necessary for extra exams during her term. Best is to consult with your eye doctor on how regularly you should have eye tests done.

Control your glucose levels in the blood is vital. It’s important to consult with your eye doctor whether more frequent eye exams might be necessary if you have the disease.

Top Reasons for a Breath Testing Procedure

Breath testing is a procedure that is seen as being noninvasive. It is used to assist doctors in making a diagnosis of different conditions. They do so through analyzing a patient’s breath as it can help the doctor to measure how much specific gases are in the stomach. Thus, it will allow him/her to conclude an accurate and quick diagnosis of what is wrong.

How does breath testing work?

There is a wide variety of different sugars people ingest each day like fructose and lactose. Typically, these get absorbed into your small bowel. However, a lot of patients can absorb sugars very poorly, thus, these sugars may be passed to the large bowel or colon.

Fermentation due to sugars that are not completely absorbed within your colon might cause symptoms generally related to IBS/irritable bowel syndrome. These symptoms may include constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and excessive winds.

The breath testing procedure is based on known facts of the workings of bacteria inside your large bowel. These either produce methane or hydrogen gas or sometimes even form a combination of these gases. It could happen when sugars you ingest doesn’t get absorbed completely through your small intestines.

Consequently, this gas gets absorbed into your bloodstream and makes its way to your lungs to be breathed out. Thus, allowing the detection of methane or hydrogen with a breath testing procedure.

Mal-absorption of sugar ingested orally like fructose or lactose can indicate an increase significantly above the baseline levels of methane or hydrogen in your breath.

Patients who have overgrowth bacteria in their small bowel can also produce gas bacteria within their small intestines. Sugars like glucose that become fermented through bacteria in the small intestines before it gets absorbed may lead to additional methane or hydrogen in a person’s breath.

Different conditions that can be diagnosed through breath testing

SIBO/bacterial overgrowth syndrome

The uncontrollable growing of bacteria in your small intestines may cause an overgrowth of bacteria. It’s possible to experience extreme diarrhea, cramping, gas and bloating.

The following breath test will be used in diagnosing SIBO:

First, you must drink a solution of sugar

Then a breathalyzer is used for you to breathe into

When you have fermented bacteria inside the small intestines, it can show up in your breath

The doctor then can diagnose and confirm your condition of SIBO

The breath test for fructose intolerance

This can determine if you have difficulty in absorbing fructose sugars. These sugars are found in wheat, pears, artichokes, onions, as well as sweeteners and in certain drinks. You may display symptoms like gas, bloating, diarrhea and cramping, which is caused by malabsorption of fructose.

This is a very similar test to the one for lactose:

Your breath will be analyzed for contents of hydrogen gas

It’s also necessary to drink some fructose that is dissolved in water

When the doctor discovers a hydrogen presence that is very high, it can indicate that you have problems with absorbing fructose.

H. Pylori/Helicobacter pylori breath testing

This bacterium frequently can be found in your duodenum or stomach’s inner lining and may cause inflammation that is chronic. It’s been related to quite a few health conditions such as gastric cancer and peptic ulcers.

With this test the doctor uses a nasal breathing cannula for you to breathe through normally:

An hour prior to your test it’s important to stop drinking or eating anything.

The doctor will connect you to the nasal breath cannula which is attached to the breath analyzer.

After he/she measure your baseline sample, a five-ounce drink solution can be given to you.

With the presence of H. Pylori, the doctor can release CO2 into your bloodstream, which can be carried and released into the lungs to electronically analyze for the presence of H. Pylori.

It takes about ten minutes to perform this testing.

Breath testing for lactose intolerance

Many people have a problem known as lactose intolerance. If you have it, your body may be unable in digesting lactose which is sugar that is found regularly in dairy products and milk. It’s important to know whether your body can absorb lactose in order to diagnose the condition.

This procedure can include the following:

You need to drink a beverage with a lot of lactose.

With regular intervals, your breath will be measured and analyzed to establish how much hydrogen you contain in your body.

If the body doesn’t digest the lactose, it can lead to bacteria that ferments and may cause the production of different gases, as well as hydrogen.

Hydrogen in high levels can indicate the body can’t digest lactose properly and the diagnoses can be that you are lactose intolerant.

If you experience bloating, have too much gas, frequently battle with diarrhea or extreme cramping, it may be a good idea to get a breath test done.

All You Need to Know About Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

Pain is a way for the body to send a warning sign to the brain. The nerves and spinal cord are like a pathway to provide these messages, traveling from the brain to the rest of the body. Pain will follow these pathways like electrical signals to the brain to interpret.

Beneath and in the skin the nerve cells are receptors and sense pain, pressure, touch, light, cold and heat. Most of these receptor cells will sense pain. With any injury, they will send a message along the nerves and the spinal cord to the brain.

The pain of the nerves is due to a disease or damage which will affect the body’s nervous system, also known as neuralgia or neuropathic pain.

TENS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a treatment device which sends electrical currents through the body to target and relieves pain. This device sends electrical pulses to control pain through your skin, and creates a momentary or lasting pain relief, as well as releasing some endorphins.

What Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS treatment is used for?

This treatment can be used for different conditions to relieve pain. It generally includes headaches, bone, muscle or joint problems, as well as pain in the back, neck, bursitis, and tendinitis. Additionally, it can be used for cancer, wounds, and injuries.

It’s also recommended for the following:

Pain due to surgery

It’s very effective to treat pain that is mild or moderate after different surgeries. It can be used after surgeries such as abdominal, orthopedic, chest, heart, gynecological and a hysterectomy.

TENS can be very effective to ease pain due to arthritis, as well as improving movement if you experience knee osteoarthritis. Yet, there is still mixed results for treating rheumatoid arthritis.

Diabetic neuropathy/nerve damage in diabetes

Studies have shown that this treatment can relieve diabetic damage to the nerves, mostly in your feet and hands.

Pain due to injury to the spinal cord

This is quite hard to treat. However, studies have shown that there are improvements and relief of pain due to injuries to the spinal cord.

Facial nerve pain

If a patient experiences some facial nerve pain this treatment can be effective. It will relieve the pain and help with activities such as sleeping, chewing and talking.

Labor and menstrual pains

TENS can provide some relief during a woman’s menstrual cycle with painful cramps, back, and menstrual pains. It can also relief labor pains the same as nondrug options.

With Fibromyalgia

Patients that suffer from Fibromyalgia can use the treatment for short-term relief of pain. It has been found to be quite effective.

Administering of TENS treatment

The doctor or therapist will apply the electrode patches directly on the area of the skin that must be treated. A mild current will run through the patches from the stimulator. TENS can also deliver medication like topical steroids through your skin and treat acute pain episodes, also known as Iontophoresis.

These mild currents will cause the medication to flow into your soft tissue and reduce any inflammation.

Pain can be controlled through TENS treatments as follows:

Stimulation of the sensory levels

This means that with TENS treatment, the electrical input will interfere with the transmission of the signals of pain. Through blocking your neural opening which is used for the pain to travel through it can assist in lessening pain.

Stimulation of the motor levels

With this method, its goal is to stimulate and cause your body to release its own endorphins to relieve pain.

Some benefits of TENS treatments

It’s a procedure with low risks

Easy to combine with different treatments and if necessary it can be repeated

Your specialist can perform the procedure in his/her office

Relaxing tendons and muscles

Reducing any inflammation

Decrease your pain from an acute condition to chronic

Alleviate effectively any pera-spinal pain

Comparing to surgery it’s non-invasive

Effective to use for back and neck pain

Consult your dermatologist or talk to your doctor for more detail on this procedure and how it can benefit you.

Laser Hair Treatment - Is This for You?

Laser treatment for hair removal is a common procedure and everyone seems to be getting it. But is the procedure safe for you? There are a lot of questions that come to mind regarding the procedure like its safety, its pros, cons, and so on. That’s perfectly fine to be confused!

Laser hair treatment can be an option worth considering. But, is it really worth it? Let’s answer this question!

It’s not magic-Be Realistic

Do not expect that your skin will feel like silk after the first treatment. This procedure takes some time and a number of repeated visits to your practitioner. According to most of the dermatologists, you will see phenomenal results after five to six laser hair removal sessions.

Moreover, each session can take about three minutes to one hour. So, be patience and trust your skin practitioner.

Can You Try Laser Treatment at any age?

Another question dermatologist’s get a lot is, ‘what age is suitable to get laser hair treatment?’ The answer is that there is no restriction, as far as the age is concerned. People of all age groups can benefit from this procedure alike. Still, you should talk to your dermatologist first to discuss with him the best course of action in your case.

Is it for all skin complexions?

Not all types of lasers are suitable for all skin complexions. Most of the lasers target the skin pigment called ‘melanin’. So if you have a darker skin complexion, your skin will have more melanin. This means that an ordinary laser would just not work for you as it would target your skin instead of targeting the hair follicles.

It is, therefore, important that you talk to an expert who knows how to select a laser based on your skin complexion. For people with darker skin complexion, the preferred laser type is the YAG laser. This laser has the ability to bypass the skin melanin to reach the roots of the hair follicles.

Does having curly hair change the choice of treatment?

Laser hair removal works on a principle called photo thermolysis. The energy from the laser targets the melanin in the roots of the hair follicle. So the laser does not know whether you have straight or curly hair. It only targets the root of follicles, which is the same no matter what kind of hair you have.

Is it suitable for someone with skin conditions?

You may have eczema or some other skin condition and may want to go for laser treatment for hair removal. It is quite natural to have apprehensions about the procedure. So is laser hair removal safe for you if you have a skin condition? Well, it depends on the current status of your condition.

If your condition is not active at the moment, a laser is perfectly safe for you. However, if your disease is active and you have skin lesions from scratching then it is better for you to postpone the laser hair treatment sessions. Until after the active phase of the disease has passed.

For that, you should talk to your dermatologist and use topical emollients and steroids based on his recommendations. After your condition has settled, you may consider going for laser hair removal sessions. In a nutshell, laser hair removal is an effective procedure that you can use to get rid of unwanted skin hair.

However, you must set clear expectations before going for a laser. You must have also had a clear idea of the pros and cons of this procedure before taking the procedure. This will help save you from any distress in the future.

Learn Why Replacing a Single Tooth with a Dental Implant Can Be More Cost Effective

Dental implants are becoming a lot more popular, and increasing numbers of people are choosing this method of tooth replacement. However quite a few still think that dental implants are expensive and that this type of treatment is out of reach. In fact, a dental implant can be surprisingly affordable, and a lot of clinics often offer special deals for this treatment. This can enable you to benefit from the very latest technology and to have high-quality dental implants to replace missing teeth.

But is it worth it just to replace a single tooth?

The answer is definitely yes, and a dental implant can be ideal for this purpose. Most people would opt for a fixed dental bridge, but this does mean crowning or replacing a total of three teeth, and a top quality bridge can cost quite a bit. Some people might not be able to have a bridge, as the adjacent teeth have to be strong enough to support the bridge.

This can be an issue if they are already missing, or if they are weak or loose. In this case, a dental implant may be the best option, especially as the alternative might be a denture that is more likely to move around and to rub uncomfortably on your gums.

Study Shows a Single Dental Implant Is Cost Effective

Still not convinced it might be cost effective or worth the extra time and effort? A study released last year reviewed the available literature on the cost-effectiveness of dental implants.

It found replacing a single tooth with a dental implant could either save money or be cost effective; in comparison with other more traditional methods of tooth replacement. Additionally, the study found that patient satisfaction was a particularly high, and that most studies found implants to be cost effective in the long term.

What Is Involved in Having a Dental Implant?

So what exactly happens during implant treatment? First of all, your dentist will need to carry out an assessment to see if you’re suitable for treatment. This is essential and will include a dental checkup and questions pertaining to your medical health. Your dentist will need to know about any medications you might be taking as these could affect treatment, as well as any health conditions you may have.

Additionally, they will want to take x-rays and a CT scan to see if the implant can be securely placed in your jaw. This will show the amount of bone in your jaw available to surround the implant, as it's important that there's sufficient bone for it to fuse with. Your dentist can answer all your questions about dental implant treatment, including the expected timeframe for completion.

If you are faced with tooth extraction, then it is generally necessary to leave the empty socket to heal for several months before placing the implant.

Once the implant post is inserted, then it's necessary to wait several more months for it to fuse with your jawbone before the permanent crown can be made. If the tooth being replaced is highly visible, then your dentist can supply you with a temporary prosthesis so your smile will remain intact during treatment.

Certain types of implants can be placed at the same time as tooth extraction, but this isn't always the case. It's better to listen to your dentist’s advice, as a few months is very little time to spend on a restoration that could last for life.

Dental Implants: Helping You to Smile After Tooth Loss

Your smile is such an integral part of your personality that it can be devastating when something happens to mar its appearance. Unfortunately, tooth loss is pretty common and can occur due to dental disease or because of trauma. Whatever the reason for your tooth loss, dental implants offer a way to help you smile again. Dental bridges supported by natural teeth along with partial or full dentures are other more traditional options to consider.

Traditional Ways of Replacing Missing Teeth

Dental bridges supported by existing teeth, along with dentures have been the traditional way to replace missing teeth and these treatments have been used for decades. However, they are often not optimal solutions and do not offer a long-term way of replacing missing teeth. Traditional dentures merely rest on the gums and can quickly become unstable and uncomfortable to wear.

With traditional dental bridges, it’s necessary for your dentist to grind down your natural teeth that will be used for support. These teeth are then covered up with dental crowns that are attached to the replacement teeth. Although this type of restoration is stable and strong, cutting down perfectly healthy and strong teeth isn’t ideal.

This leaves these teeth at increased risk of infection and decay at some point during the future. In comparison, dental implants don’t cause these problems. Instead, offer a good, strong and reliable long-term solution, restoring your smile and your ability to eat just about all the foods you love.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Your natural teeth have roots that extend into the jawbone and which help hold them firmly in place. A dental implant is designed to closely replicate a natural tooth. Unlike other tooth replacement options that merely rest on the gums, dental implants have a titanium alloy post that is inserted directly into the jawbone during a short surgical procedure. This is used to support a tooth.

Once the post has been inserted into the jawbone, it soon becomes firmly fused in place during a process called Osseointegration. This is where new bone cells grow on the post which will often have been specially treated to encourage this process, holding it in place so it cannot move. Obviously, this provides an extremely strong anchorage point for a new replacement tooth. There is another important reason why you should consider choosing dental implants.

Protecting Your Jawbone

When a natural tooth and its tooth root are removed, it has a detrimental effect on the jawbone that used to surround it. A natural tooth provides stimulation to the jawbone through the tooth roots and this stimulation ensures that old bone cells are continually renewed as they die off. When the tooth and tooth root is removed, this stimulation is no longer received by the surrounding bone.

Other methods of tooth replacement such as dental bridges and dentures merely rest on the gums. As a result, the jawbone will fail to replace old bone cells and will gradually diminish. This loss of jawbone has a destabilizing effect on any remaining natural teeth.

The detrimental effect on your facial dimensions, reducing the height between your upper and lower jaws. With dental implants, this doesn’t happen, as instead the jawbone surrounding the implant post receives plenty of stimulation telling it to replace old bone cells.

Restoring Your Smile so It Looks Naturally Beautiful

With the right kind of dental implant treatment, it’s easy to forget you ever lost teeth. Dental implants can be used to support single crowns, bridges or even implant supported dentures. Treatment is very versatile and there is a good solution for just about everybody. What’s even better is that with the proper dental care, dental implants have the potential to last for many years while some people will enjoy them for life.

Modern dental implant treatment is extremely sophisticated and will replace your teeth in a way that looks amazingly natural. If you struggled with teeth that were broken down or decaying before they had to be removed, then you should find your new smile is greatly improved and it will feel much more comfortable. With dental implant teeth, you should be able to enjoy just about all the foods you used to love, so getting a nutritionally balanced diet is easy.

Can Anyone Have Dental Implants?

Dental implant treatment isn’t right for everybody, but it is suitable for most people. You could be a good candidate if you are over the age of 18 and your teeth and jaws have finished growing and developing, and if your general and dental health is reasonable. If you are older, treatment could be highly beneficial.

Particularly if you currently wear full dentures and feel completely fed up with all the problems they can bring. Being older definitely isn’t a barrier for treatment as your implant dentist will be far more interested in your medical history. This is because certain diseases affect the way the body heals, particularly those that suppress the immune system such as HIV, AIDS, and diabetes.

Your dentist will also need to know about any medications you take and which could slow down or negatively impact healing. Even if you are not sure, it’s still worth an initial consultation with a good dental implant dentist who will carefully assess every person for this treatment.

Discovering Which Type of Dental Implant Treatment Is Best for You

An initial consultation will also help you discover which type of implant treatment will be best suited for your needs. There are numerous solutions available, some of which allow the dental implants to be immediately loaded with new implant teeth. Just a short while after implant surgery is completed. Even if this isn’t the case, your implant dentist will ensure you have temporary teeth until the implant posts have bonded with your jawbone.

You need never worry about being left without teeth. Another thing that can concern people is the cost of treatment. Often dental implant treatments are very affordable, particularly those for implant supported dentures. This is where the implant supported teeth are fully removable for easy cleaning, but which will be firmly held in place in your mouth.

This can be a very cost-effective solution for anybody with full dentures as only a few dental implants are required. Dental implants offer a wonderful solution to help restore your smile. Don’t put up with tooth loss a moment longer, but instead contact your dentist to find out about this exciting option.

Why Consider Professional Teeth Whitening?

Just about everybody is sporting a whiter smile these days and it has certainly never been easier. But, some ways are safer and will achieve far superior results than others. If you care about your dental health, especially in the longer term, you are far better off having a professional teeth whitening treatment. It’s better than spending money on often ineffective and sometimes dangerous over-the-counter products.

The same goes for home remedies, as the internet is full of them. Why take the advice of someone who almost certainly will not have the specialized training, knowledge, and experience you’ll find in your local dental office?

The Perils of Home Whitening

Although a whiter smile can look amazing and can knock years off your appearance, if done incorrectly it could damage your teeth and gums for life. This can result in unwanted pain and tooth sensitivity at best. But at worst it can strip your tooth enamel, leaving you with costly restorative dental bills for life.

Prime culprits include home teeth whitening remedies detailed online. Particularly those advising the use of baking soda, salt, soap or hydrogen peroxide in the quest for a whiter smile. Using over-the-counter remedies is a little safer, provided you only use them as instructed and aren’t tempted to leave the products on your teeth for longer than recommended.

Often people will do this because the active ingredients in over-the-counter whitening kits aren’t very strong. They mistakenly believe that using them for longer will whiten their smile. In fact, what can happen is that teeth become over-bleached, so, they appear gray rather than white.

If the tooth enamel is stripped, teeth will automatically appear darker. This is because tooth enamel is naturally slightly opaque, helping to block out the dentin underneath which contains the tooth’s natural color. As dentin tends to be darker, teeth with thinner enamel will also look increasingly yellow or gray.

Protecting and Safely Whitening Your Teeth in Your Dental Office

When you visit your dental office for a teeth whitening procedure, you will receive treatment that is highly effective. Providing you with the results you desire and above all, it will be safe for your dental health. Your dentist will not recommend this treatment unless they feel it is appropriate for your dental needs.

Before you can have any kind of teeth whitening treatment, your dentist will want to examine your teeth and gums and this is absolutely essential.

The point of this examination is to determine if you have any cavities or leaky fillings, or other restorations that are failing, or if you have any signs of gum disease or other dental problems. If you do have any dental problems, these must be treated before you can safely whiten your teeth.

If you were to whiten without treating these problems then your treatment is likely to feel extremely uncomfortable or even painful. The bleaching gel will be able to get into your teeth or into your gums, worsening any dental conditions. Another important part of this examination is to determine the efficacy of any whitening treatment supplied by your dentist.

Everybody’s teeth whiten slightly differently. Therefore, it’s important to have a realistic expectation as to what can be safely achieved. This will also depend on any existing dental restorations. For example, crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers and white fillings will not change color during a tooth whitening treatment.

If these restorations are currently the same color as your teeth, you might need to budget to have them replaced after your teeth whitening treatment is completed. If they are older restorations, they may need replacing pretty soon in any case, as no dental restoration will last forever. Once your teeth have been whitened, your dentist will be able to closely match the new restorations to your new, whiter smile.

Exploring Different Ways to Whiten

Most dental offices offer a couple of different ways for patients to safely whiten their teeth. The first is to choose an in-office teeth whitening treatment, where teeth are bleached in as little as an hour, providing fast and effective results. This type of treatment is wonderful for anybody who’d like to whiten their teeth almost immediately.

It can be ideal when preparing for a special event or before you’re due to go on vacation and would like to look your best. The second way to whiten is to use a customized home teeth whitening kit supplied by your dental office. This option is generally more cost-effective and once you have the kit it should only take a couple of weeks to whiten your teeth, all in the privacy of your own home.

With a home whitening kit, your dentist will take dental impressions of your teeth which are used to create your custom made whitening trays. These are plastic trays that fit tightly over your teeth and all you have to do is to fill them with whitening gel. Your dentist will show you exactly how much gel to use and can instruct you on how long you need to wear the whitening trays to get the desired effects.

Within a few days, you should begin to see results, and after two or three weeks your teeth should look much whiter and brighter. A customized home whitening kit can be a very nice way to whiten if your teeth are slightly sensitive. You can adjust the time spent wearing the trays and if necessary can leave a day or two in between treatments.

Your dentist can also adjust the strength of the teeth whitening gel prescribed to ensure the experience is more comfortable. Another advantage of using a home whitening tray is that you will be able to reuse the trays at a later date. Your dentist can supply additional whitening gel when you need to top up the results.

Your smile is well worth protecting, so why try to save a few bucks with an over-the-counter or home whitening remedy. Your dentist will make sure you get a beautiful white smile without risking your dental health.

Trichomoniasis During Pregnancy

Trichomoniasis is the most common STD in the US mainly because it very rarely shows any symptoms. In fact, only about 30% of all women affected have any symptoms, and even some of those who do have symptoms only show very mild signs. Due to its difficulty in detection, it can even affect pregnant women, and this can affect the baby. This infection is commonly known as trich.

Effects of trichomoniasis during pregnancy

Although it may not show any symptoms, the protozoa which cause trichomoniasis, Trichomonas vaginitis, can affect an unborn baby’s health. Often, it leads to premature birth due to the premature rupture of the genital membranes. This is referred to as preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM). A premature birth is that which occurs before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Besides, PPROM, trichomoniasis can also lead to low birth-weight where the baby is less than 5.5 pounds at birth. Both PPROM and low birth-weight are among the most common causes of infant mortality.

Babies born from mothers, who have had a trichomoniasis infection before and during pregnancy, can have a lower birth weight. This has its own consequences during the first few weeks and often months after the baby is born.

In rare cases, trichomoniasis can also pass from the mother to the baby during birth, causing the baby to become infected. This is rare, though, it is still more common among female babies. If there are symptoms, such as inflammation, these make the mother more susceptible to other STDs including HIV. This can bring about more complications of their own.

How do you get trichomoniasis?

The parasite that causes trichomoniasis is transmitted through sexual contact, which can be between a man and a woman, or woman and another woman. It is not transmitted from men to men because the parasite does not affect the anus or any other parts of the body. The parasite incubates for 5 to 28 days, after which time symptoms may begin to show.

Some of the symptoms in men are:

•    irritation and itching inside the penis

•    burning sensation after urination or ejaculation

•    discharge from the penis

In women, symptoms may be:

•    discharge from the vagina which is thin and has an unusual smell. The vaginal discharge has a white, yellow or green color, sometimes a clear one

•    irritation, itching, soreness and redness around the vagina

To reduce the chances of infection, use of condoms is the only way, but you have to use the condom correctly. Sometimes, the condom may not be effective and the parasite is transmitted nonetheless.

Risk factors

Not every woman has an increased risk of getting trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis risk factors include:

•    Unsafe sex

•    Having multiple sexual partners,

•    Changing sexual partners too often,

•    Engaging in sexual activity too early,

•    Poor personal hygiene,

•    Having other sexually transmitted diseases in the past,

•    Having trichomoniasis in the past, etc.

How is it treated?

The parasite that causes trichomoniasis can be seen in a fluid sample, which can be taken from the vaginal discharge in women or urine in men. When it’s detected, antibiotics are prescribed, and these are single-dose antibiotics which could be metronidazole or tinidazole.

These medications can even be taken by a pregnant woman because they don’t harm the baby.

However, you should avoid taking any alcohol for up to 24 hours after taking the medication. Furthermore, if you’re pregnant, you should avoid alcohol altogether.

Unfortunately, despite it being so common, trichomoniasis is never diagnosed unless there are symptoms. Because the symptoms are rare, it often affects pregnant women, leading to the complications mentioned above.

Recent research has even suggested that treating trichomoniasis during the term of the pregnancy does not necessarily lower the risk to the baby and that the damage may already be done. Nevertheless, it’s always best to get treatment all the same. Your partner will need to be treated as well, as this is a sexually transmitted disease.

How to prevent trichomoniasis?

Leading a safe sexual life is the key factor when it comes to preventing trichomoniasis. Have sex with a safe partner, who has sex only with you. Don’t change your sexual partners often. If you decide to have sex with a new partner, someone you don’t trust or don’t have enough information about his health and sexual history, use condoms.

This is the best way of protection against any sexually transmitted diseases including trichomoniasis. Condoms protect you against HIV/AIDS as well.

What Are the Alternatives to Knee Replacement?

Knee replacement surgery is becoming increasingly more common nowadays for treating problems with the knee joint. However, it is a major surgery and should only be reserved as the final option. So, before you undergo or even consider a knee replacement surgery, it might be good to look at some available alternatives first.

There are some measures you can take to reduce pain from the knee that is not aimed directly at the knee but on improving your quality of life.

These include the list below.

Physical exercise

Consider hiring a physical therapist to help create a personalized exercise regimen aimed at your particular need. A specialized therapist will be able to take images of your knee using ultrasound and X-ray to get a clear picture of the state of your knee. Afterward, they can recommend exercises to help with treatment. Additionally, they can train you on how to undertake physical activities so that there is less strain on your knee.

The purpose of exercise and physical activities is twofold – to strengthen your muscles and reduce pain. One of the main reasons knee replacement is offered is because of severe pain that disrupts your normal life. Exercise helps to reduce pain by stimulating the brain to produce endorphins. This is obviously a temporary measure since it doesn’t treat the problem.

Although, it does give way for the next benefit – strengthening of muscles. When your muscles are stronger, they take more of the body’s weight away from the joint, reducing the strain. Furthermore, the more you exercise, the more you lose weight, producing the same effect. In short, exercising can have several benefits.

This is another palliative measure that aims to reduce pain in the knee by stimulating specific nerves in the body. Many people who have undergone acupuncture claim it has numerous benefits, although there is no medical research on it. Other measures include taking herbal teas that are known to produce euphoric effects and also reduce pain around the body.

There are numerous pain medications which can be offered in the form of pills, topical creams and injections. These medications are usually steroids to reduce inflammation within the knee joint. When the pain is too severe, injections remain to be the only remaining alternative, and they are administered after a given period of time.

Besides medication, hyaluronic acid can be injected too. It acts as lubrication for the joint and this reduces pain. Then there’s prolotherapy where a dextrose solution is injected into the joint to provide nutrients and improve blood supply to the joint by the blood vessels.

Minor surgeries

There are various surgeries that can be done on the knee which is less serious than a total knee replacement, and some of them are listed here.

•    Arthroscopy - it involves making a small incision through which a small camera and tube are inserted to wash out any bone fragments within the knee joint. Arthroscopy is less invasive that the traditional surgical procedure of a knee replacement.

•    Osteotomy – when only a portion of the joint is damaged, this procedure realigns the knee joint so that pressure is taken off the damaged area. Unfortunately, only a few patients are suitable for such a treatment. Osteotomy is mostly performed in younger patients who have only limited damage to the knee.

•    Mosaicplasty – this is a kind of a transplant of bone cartilage from one part of the joint to the damaged part

•    Stem cell therapy – bone marrow is taken from another healthy joint in the body and transplanted into the knee so that the bone tissue there can regenerate. It is an experimental technique which uses the bone marrow stem cells of the hip in order to help regenerate those of the knee.

This means a knee replacement surgery is avoided. Nowadays this minor surgical procedure is becoming more popular daily and studies have shown that stem cell therapy helps reduce knee pain.

Knee replacement surgery should never be your number one option. It is very important to weigh the pros and cons of such a surgery before making a final decision. Consider all your options and explore other alternatives whenever that is possible.

If knee replacement surgery is the only necessary treatment for you, delaying such a surgery will just make your situation get worse.

Top Reasons for Choosing a Pediatric Dentist to Look After Your Child

It could be that your general dentist has a great chair side manner, but they may not have all the skills necessary to look after your child’s oral care. Pediatric dentists have to first complete training as a general dentist before going on to specialize in pediatric dentistry.

This is a process that takes several years of additional training. During this time they learn advanced techniques and procedures that will help them provide the very best level of dental care for your child.

Why Does a Child Require a Different Type of Dentist to an Adult?

A child’s dental needs can be quite different from that of an adult’s. At this stage in life, their teeth, jaws and facial structures are developing and growing quite rapidly. The type of dental care a child receives at this time in their life can help set them on the road to enjoy a lifetime of healthy teeth. This will help ensure that their potential for having an attractive and nicely aligned smile is fully realized.

The Very Best Dental Care At All Stages of Your Child’s Development

When you stop and think about it, your child’s dental health undergoes a huge change in the space of just a few short years. From the time they get their first tooth until about the age of 12, your child will have experienced the arrival of all their primary teeth or milk teeth. They will also get their departure, leaving them to be replaced with their adult teeth that will hopefully be permanent for life.

This is all perfectly normal, but at this stage of their development there could be a number of complications that may arise. Problems with the development of their jaws can form, perhaps because of oral habits like thumb sucking. Then there are other potential problems such as impacted wisdom teeth. All these issues could affect their future dental health and their appearance.

Taking them to visit an experienced pediatric dentist will help ensure that any developmental problems are quickly identified. Your kids can be treated using the very best and latest dental procedures.

Pediatric Dentists Are Skilled in Specialized Techniques

Children are more likely to require certain specialized techniques; particularly those that help prevent tooth decay. Unfortunately, children are more susceptible to tooth decay compared to adults. Utilizing the very best preventative dental care techniques can help reduce this risk.

A pediatric dentist is highly skilled in recommending and using treatments. These include fluoride applications, dental sealants and other preventative dental care measures that will help ensure a child’s primary teeth last until they are ready to fall out naturally. If a child does suffer from a tooth infection it often needs to be treated in a different way to adult tooth decay. Using modified root canal treatments to help preserve the tooth.

If a primary tooth cannot be saved, a pediatric dentist will know how best to keep the space open until the adult tooth is ready to come through. This is important; otherwise, the remaining primary teeth can shift position. Thus, leaving insufficient space for the adult tooth to emerge in the correct alignment.

Sometimes children can benefit from an early orthodontic evaluation and a pediatric dentist can keep a close eye on the way their teeth and jaws are developing. If necessary, they will recommend they see an orthodontist. This evaluation can take place as early as age 6 or seven. This can be enormously beneficial in correcting issues that may have been caused by oral habits like thumb sucking.

Early orthodontic treatment uses specialized techniques to take advantage of a child’s growth and development. It can help to create the best possible facial profile for a child.

Letting Your Child Grow up without Dental Fears or Phobias

Dental fears and phobias are incredibly common and can often be passed on from adult to child. Making sure your child sees a pediatric dentist from a very early age as it will help minimize this risk. They can grow up benefiting from regular dental care which will greatly reduce their risk of dental problems. This is far better than waiting until a young child develops dental problems.

Taking them to see a general dentist, in an adult oriented dental office at a time when the child is likely to be in pain and perhaps quite scared can form fears. In comparison, pediatric dental offices are child-friendly, they have gone to enormous care so that it is extremely welcoming and non-scary. The brightly colored walls are covered with favorite cartoon characters. There are plenty of toys to keep children entertained in the comfortable waiting room, including play stations.

Using child-sized equipment can also help a kid feel more comfortable when receiving dental treatment. Above all, seeing a pediatric dentist will help enormously as they are extremely skilled and are specially trained so they can relate to children. This helps them to feel more at ease. If your child does require treatment then the caring dental team can explain it to them using terms that they will find easy to understand.

They aim to make sure every visit is as pleasant as possible for young patients. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a young child who is pleased to see a dentist.

Get Advice on Home Dental Care

Your child’s pediatric dentists can also give you lots of advice on how to look after their teeth at home, right from the time the very first tooth emerges. When you go visit the dentist, they can demonstrate the correct way to brush and floss a young child’s teeth.

They will use techniques that will make this task as pleasant as possible for you both. When your child grows up and begins to brush on their own, your dentist can teach them the correct brushing techniques.

When they are ready, the dentist will show them the correct flossing techniques as well. Sometimes it is easier for a child to learn from a dental professional than from a parent. Especially as they can also explain to them why dental care is so important. They can also offer dietary advice to help minimize the risk of dental problems like tooth decay.
